Our curriculum has been designed to ensure our learners gain all the skills needed to be successful once leaving us.
Intent: Empowering learners to reach meaningful destinations
At Ambitious College, our curriculum is centred on enabling learners to achieve greater independence and access to fulfilling post-college destinations. It consists of two key, interconnected courses delivered across six flexible stages:
- Skills for Life (Stages 1–3)
- Skills for Work and Learning (Stages 1- 3)
Learners may enter at any stage based on their needs and progress through stages as they build confidence, independence, and clarity about their future. All learning is destination-focused, aiming to prepare learners for:
- Living more independently (with family or in supported living)
- Participating in the community and accessing community programmes
- Pursuing further education (FE) with or without support
- Engaging in supported internships, volunteering, or paid work
Curriculum courses
Skills for Life
(Stages 1–3)
Laying the foundation for independence and inclusion, the skills for life course develops essential skills to support personal growth, confidence, and quality of life. It caters for learners with diverse cognitive, physical and emotional needs through a personalised and inclusive approach. The goal is to build the skills needed to live more independently and engage meaningfully in community life.
Skills for Work and Learning
(Stages 1-3)
The course supports the development of key skills and prepares our young people for the world beyond college weather that means moving into employment, enrolling in mainstream education, or living independently. This course blends classroom learning with real-world experiences, helping learners build confidence, self-advocacy, and practical skills tailored to their goals.
Implementation
The curriculum is delivered through class teaching, community learning, and one-to-one work. Learners are supported by Specialist Teaching Assistants (STAs) and support levels are reviewed termly by the Trans-disciplinary Team (TDT). Lecturers devise and deliver the sessions and targets for learning are set by the whole TDT. Each course has specific sessions key skills areas are baselined against in the first six weeks. The baselines are regularly, and progress tracked to ensure that learners are working on the skill areas where there is most need to develop.
Community learning and travel training make up an important part of our curriculum. Learners are supported to learn in functional ways in environments that are appropriate to the skills being taught.
Impact
We have high aspirations for our learners, and we strive for the impact of our curriculum to be the attainment of positive destinations, and the skills they need to be successful in them, for all our young people post Ambitious College.
